So, Arsene Wenger saw this one, did he?The legendary Mr Magoo has felt the need to stoke the mob fires of national fervour by calling for clubs to be investigated for withdrawing players from international duty. A very interesting development, I find, but not because of this ridiculous argument about player availability.I'm not going to repeat all that same counter-rubbish that isn't even worth saying, because anyone who thinks injured players should be reporting to play for England is either a sadist or a crazy person.Wenger is correct in saying that the friendly was arranged for a stupid time of year, right in the middle of the Premier League calendar and just before Matchdays Five and Six of the Champions League. But for me, the most interesting aspect of this story is the clear and obvious way that Wenger has attempted to try and stir up the storm against his Premiership rivals, knowing full well that the English media will jump on his comments as excuse to further kick out at Manchester United, Chelsea, and Liverpool.Wenger knows that this debate is raging primarily in England, and, as everyone knows, Theo Walcott is his only English international, and, prior to being called up, Walcott had no major injury concerns and so withdrawal wasn't an option.Walcott was injured in training for England, and Wenger knows he has no recourse to argue the injury. The irony of course is that Wenger has always spoken out against players representing their countries in the African Nation

16 Vote(s)

It is 13 games into the season and Blackburn sit in the relegation zone. Should the alarm bells be ringing for Rovers fans?Paul Ince was a bit of a surprise appointment at Ewood Park. After a hugely successful season at MK Dons, winning the Football League Trophy in March and the League Two title in May, Ince was hot property. The general consensus, however, seemed to be Ince wasn't ready for the Premiership. Leicester City came in for Ince and he was widely expected to sign up at the Walker Stadium. He knocked them back however, and just a matter of days later shocked many by being the man to take the helm at Blackburn.Taking Ray Mathias with him, he looked to improve the squad for the forthcoming season. He was met by a mini-exodus however. Brad Friedel jumped ship, and David Bentley was sold on to Spurs.Ince bolstered the squad with winger Vince Grella, Keith Andrews, and Chilean Carlos Villanueva. He replaced Friedel with Paul Robinson, a solid signing.Overall, it looks clear that the squad has diminished in terms of quality. Andrews may have just scored his first international goal, but I'd be be surprised if many have even heard of the others. Was this down to Ince's lack of knowledge of the higher-end transfer market? Mathias would hardly have brought a knowledge of top-flight football.Look at the result, it looks as though Rovers should get ready for a season of struggle. It begs the question, was Ince the right man? There are other candidates that could have done

16 Vote(s)

William Gallas has launched yet another withering attack on his Arsenal colleagues, this time while away on international duty with France. The 31-year-old central defender has been dismayed by the poor performances and lack of team spirit amongst his teammates this season. As reported by the Daily Telegraph, Gallas said:"We are coming up against teams who are not scared to play football against us. We are not brave enough in battle. I think we need to be soldiers. We have to be warriors.""Against Tottenham, there was a problem at half-time. The only thing I could say to them was that we resolve these problems after the match, not in the break.“There are things that can’t be said and can’t be tolerated.”Gallas—who infamously sat on the St. Andrews pitch in a public display of a disaffection after a disappointing 2-2 draw with Birmingham—believes that he ends up being the scapegoat for a lot of the team’s criticism, and it is unfair:“When, as captain, some players come up to you and talk to you about a player...complaining about him...and then during the match you speak to this player and the player in question insults us, there comes a time where we can no longer comprehend how this can happen.“I am trying to defend myself a bit without giving names. Otherwise I’m taking it all [the blame]. It’s very frustrating. I’m 31, the player is six years younger than me.”If Gallas’ maths is correct, the

10 Vote(s)

Arsenal captain William Gallas made the headlines yesterday when he claimed that the Arsenal dressing room is divided, that Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott had a fight during the Spurs game, and that there is a "rat" at the club. The fallout from the interview, given to a French newspaper, has seen many call for Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to sack Gallas as captain. Now there's reports, particularly in today's London Evening Standard, that Gallas plans to move back to France next season.Whilst I believe that Kolo Toure, rather than Gallas, should be captain, getting rid of Gallas altogether would be another massive blow for Arsenal. He's one of the rare things at the Emirates—experienced and has a history of winning trophies, having won two Premier League titles and the Carling Cup whilst at Chelsea. However, Gallas is also experienced at being moody when things do not go his way, as best demonstrated at Birmingham City last season when Arsenal let a lead slip away. An Arsenal captain should be strong, back his teammates all the way, and not hesitate to help them in the right direction—in short, exactly like Tony Adams. He should not be petulant, sell his teammates down the river or go missing in big games—like Gallas.Nigel Winterburn has come out and suggested that Wenger will not take the captaincy away from Gallas, claiming that it will undermine Arsenal's season, as if four defeats haven't already done that so far this season.I disagree—new ideas

20 Vote(s)

Naturally, under such financial pressure they are thought to want to terminate their agreement.Saudi Telecom already have one foot in the door at Old Trafford having signed a £10m, five-year deal in August to advertise on United's website and around the stadium. They also send 70 Saudi students each year to train with the club and are thought to be very keen to step into AIG's shoes and display their brand on the United shirt.I'll be a lot happier with a sponsor that has a better image.
Rafael Benitez has been coaching first-team sides for 13 years now. Sir Alex Ferguson has been doing it for 33 years. Benitez has won five major trophies, while his Old Trafford equivalent has won 29.Comparing these two managers at this stage in their careers would be like comparing The Beatles to McFly. Except Benitez is good, and McFly aren't.Anyway! The point I'm trying to make is Rafael Benitez is certainly a long way off achieving the success Fergie has experienced in his illustrious career. But are there more similarities between the two managers than we think? Could Benitez possibly become as successful as Fergie? No chance, I hear you cry! But I'm no so sure.Sir Alex Ferguson arrived in management in 1974, and he had to wait until 1978 before he got a chance at a "big" club—Aberdeen. At Aberdeen, Fergie won three Scottish Premier League titles in eight years, toppling the dominance of the Glasgow clubs Celtic and Rangers. He also won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup with the unglamorous Scottish side.He arrived at Manchester United in 1986, and had to wait until 1990 for his first major trophy—an FA Cup. When he joined, he claimed his goal was to knock Liverpool off their perch at the top of English football. The wait for a league title took even longer, it wasn't until the inaugural Premier League season of 1992-93 that Ferguson claimed his first league crown with United. He has, of course, gone on to win nine more leagues, two Champions Leagues and four more FA C

10 Vote(s)

Roy of the Rovers, was by far the most popular football comic ever.Running from 1954 to 2001, stories covered, Roy as a teen trying to break into the famed "Melchester Rovers" team, winning every trophy imaginable, representing his country in the world cup, playing with pop stars and even relegation. He even had an unstoppable shot called the "Racy Rocket"....ah those were the days.Roy Race made his debut in the Tiger comic in 1954. Tiger was from the same stable as the famed "Eagle Comic" which focused on the science-fiction end of things, with Dan Dare as it's banner character.Tiger was focused on real life, and all of it's stories were based in the "real" world. And this new direction proved to be an instant success. Readers took to football stories like proverbial ducks to water, with Roy of the Rovers becoming one of the most popular stories on the planet, in the '70s as sales reached the million mark. Considering the comic was weekly, this is some sales figure.Beginning on September 11th 1954, Roy of the Rovers was the banner storyline in the Tiger Comic. Initially focusing on a teenage Roy as he tried to break into the first team at Melchester Rovers. After a whole year in the youth team (story-lines were slow-burners in those days) Roy eventually made it into Melchester's first team and became a star. Roy won his first honour in 1957 (League Title) and over the next 46 years, it was a rare occasion for Roy to go a season without a trophy. As was expected with most com

6 Vote(s)
